Our guarantee

Our 10-year workmanship guarantee

Every rooflight, skylight and roof window we install comes with a 10-year guarantee on our workmanship. This page sets out, in plain terms, what that means and how to use it.

What the guarantee is

Avon Skylights Bristol guarantees the workmanship of each installation for 10 years from the date the job is finished. If, during that time, a fault appears that is caused by the way we fitted the unit, we will come back and put it right at no cost to you.

The guarantee is given by us, as the firm that did the work. It applies to the property where the work was carried out, and it passes to a new owner if you sell the house within the 10 years. We confirm it in writing with your completion paperwork, and that document, together with your quote and invoice, is your record of what was fitted and when.

What it covers

The guarantee covers the parts of the job that depend on our skill and care:

  • Fitting. The frame fixed square, secure and to the maker's instructions, with the opening trimmed and supported properly.
  • Flashing and kerbs. The flashing kit, upstand or kerb we fitted, and the way we dressed the slates, tiles or roof covering around it.
  • Weathertightness of our work. Water getting in at the junction between our installation and the roof, where that is caused by how we fitted it.
  • Our internal finish. Linings and trim we installed coming loose or opening up because of how they were fixed.
  • Motorised units. The wiring connection and controls we installed for an electric unit, where the fault is in our work rather than in the product.

Where we find a fault covered by the guarantee, we fix it with no charge for labour or materials.

What sits outside it

A workmanship guarantee is about how the job was done. Some things are covered elsewhere, and some are not covered at all.

The maker's product warranty

The rooflight itself, its glass, seals, frame, motor, sensor and blind, is covered by the manufacturer's own warranty. Its length and terms are set by the maker and differ between products. We hand over the warranty details at the end of the job and, where a maker asks for it, register the product for you. If a product fault appears, we will help you raise it with the maker.

Things this guarantee does not cover

  • Ordinary wear and tear, and the gradual weathering of materials.
  • Damage from storms, falling branches, impact, ice from blocked gutters, or other events outside our control.
  • Faults caused by alterations, maintenance or other work carried out by anyone else, on the unit or the roof around it.
  • Problems in parts of the roof we did not work on.
  • Condensation forming on the inside of the glass, which depends on how the room is heated and ventilated.
  • Faults that result from the unit not being used or looked after as the maker's instructions describe.

Any problem with a rooflight in the first 10 years is covered.

This guarantee covers our workmanship. The product carries the maker's own warranty, and damage or later work by others falls outside both.

How to make a claim

  1. Get in touch. Call 0117 290 0727, email info@avonskylightsbristol.co.uk or message us, with your address, roughly when the work was done, and a description of the problem. Photos help.
  2. We visit. We arrange a time to come and look at the installation, inside and out.
  3. We tell you what we find. If the fault is in our workmanship, we agree a date and put it right. If it is a product fault, we explain that and help you take it to the maker. If it falls outside both, we explain why, in writing if you ask.

Please let us know about a problem as soon as you notice it. Small faults are quicker to put right, and it helps us see the cause before other weather has had a go at it.

Keeping the guarantee in good order

Keep your quote, invoice and completion paperwork together, and pass them on if you sell the house. Use and clean the rooflight as the maker describes, keep gutters and the area around a flat rooflight clear of leaves, and ask before anyone else works on the unit or the roof around it. That is all it takes.

Questions about the guarantee before you book are welcome. You can read more about how we work, see what a quote includes on our costs page, or ask for a free survey. Our complaints procedure explains what to do if you are unhappy with how a claim was handled, and our terms and conditions set out the full contract.

Points people raise about the guarantee

Does the guarantee cover a rooflight I bought and asked you to fit?

It covers our workmanship in fitting it, as with any other job. The product itself is covered by whatever warranty came with it from the seller or maker.

Is there a charge to make a claim?

No. There is no fee for us to visit and look at a fault you think is in our work. If it is ours, putting it right costs you nothing.
